REQUEST

The reproduction of a liturgical treasure: a journey through time

The Ambrosian Missal project concerns the faithful reproduction of a volume printed in 1959. It is a rare and valuable work of which only one copy exists. The customer asked us to reproduce this masterpiece, while preserving its historicity and authenticity to revitalise a missal that spans over 70 years of liturgical tradition.

DEVELOPMENT

The art of reproducing antiquity: a process of historical fidelity

The development process of the Ambrosian Missal required meticulous and painstaking work. We carefully dissected the original volume to reproduce every single page and create a visual effect that reflects the historicity of the work. By using 40g Bible paper and multi-colour printing, we have simulated the antique appearance of the pages while maintaining the sharpness of the text and minimising transparency.

A rediscovered heritage: reproduction of the Ambrosian missal

DETAILS

Bookbinding from the past: a tribute to historical craftsmanship

The Ambrosian Missal consists of 1704 pages and for the binding we were inspired by traditional techniques. After extensive research, we selected materials that were faithfully modelled on those of the period by using imitation leather for the cover. This was refined with hot foil stamping on the covers and spine, along with an inner material that echoes the flyleaves, a 115g Surbalin Moirè, to achieve a result that celebrates the beauty of antiquity.

TECHNIQUE

Binding and finishing: with sustainable materials

The book was tied using thread binding, with a gold lip on the three sides of the book. We added five bookmark ribbons, with the capital chosen in a colour that harmonises with the other elements. The cover and the inside of the flyleaves were decorated with gold hot stamping. Finally, the book was punched to obtain rounded corners, a detail that faithfully reproduces the characteristics of the original work.
