THE WAY WE WERE

An evolving story
since 1885

1885

Family origins: the birth of Cerutti & Pozzi

The story of Nastro & Nastro began with Rocco Cerutti, born in 1856, who, after graduating as a ‘master craftsman’ in 1885, completed his apprenticeship by the Bolognini Pusterla printing company in Luino and set up the printing enterprise. In 1913, he founded ‘Cerutti & Malagoli’ with Carlo Malagoli, which became ‘Cerutti & Pozzi’ in 1920 with his granddaughter Paolina Pozzi.

1921

The beginning of the Nastro generation

Cultural commitment has always been crucial to Cerutti & Pozzi. In 1921, began the publication of the weekly ‘Evoluzione’, linked to Rocco's socialist sympathies. In 1923 Paolina married Antonio Nastro. In 1931, Paolina's brother Francesco Pozzi joined the company, which became Cerutti & Pozzi di Francesco e Paolina Pozzi. After Rocco's death in 1937, the business continued with them. In the 1950s the company acquired the Bruno printing house and in 1956 started printing the periodical ‘Il Corriere del Verbano’, until 1993. Francesco Nastro, born in 1926, the son of Paolina Pozzi and Antonio Nastro, who had been active in the business for a long time and had known the company since he was a child, took over the printing house management and in 1969, when the two brothers withdrew from the company in his favour, he acquired full ownership.

1970

The cultural and commercial contribution

In the 1970s, Francesco Nastro introduced major changes at Cerutti & Pozzi, founding Centrostampa in 1973 and splitting the printing business from the stationery business. With the use of new two-colour offset machines, he turned the printing house into an industrial company. He became a cultural publisher in 1978 with the magazine ‘La Rotonda’ and opened a bookshop in 1988. In the same year, Centrostampa became Nastro & Nastro srl. The stationery shop underwent developments with the opening of new headquarters. Manuela Nastro, Francesco's daughter, joined the company. In 1990, Nastro & Nastro moved to Germignaga, in the former textile factory of the Swiss company Stehli.

1990-2000

Modern development between reorganisations and new locations

With the move to Germignaga investments are made in machinery and advanced technology. Francesco's son Nicola Nastro, after working in the family bookshop, starts working in the print shop in September 1990. Nastro & Nastro grows internationally, with 65% of sales abroad while the domestic market is concentrated in northern Italy. Investments in increasingly cutting-edge technologies allow the development of new product lines for the food and packaging sectors.

2005

New technological investments

After Francesco Nastro's death in February 2006, Nicola took over the company management. In November 2007, the printing house moved to the new building constructed on the adjacent land and, meanwhile, new investments were made in machinery with increasingly sophisticated equipment, including the cold foil printing device. In 2008, Nastro & Nastro joined the ‘Imprese per il territorio’ (Companies for the Territory) Association, whose actions are inspired by the principles of social and environmental responsibility linked to the territory in which it operates, while remains to be active in local cultural life with publishing initiatives.

2010- today

Innovation and sustainability at the heart of growth

The evolution of the market directs the company towards choices aimed at sustainability. With the advent of digital printing, new investments in increasingly sophisticated technologies are required, which reduce ignitions and production times. A first machine is installed in 2016 and a second one in 2019 to guarantee to the clients efficient and reliable production, always at the cutting edge with the use of special varnishes and colours such as white and fluorescent dyes. Nastro & Nastro, more and more attentive to the environment and to the safety and quality of the products supplied to the clients, has obtained two important certifications:

  • FSC for its constant commitment to the use of raw materials derived from sustainable forest management.
  • BRC Packaging Materials Standard in 2018, for the daily attention that Nastro & Nastro pays to the management and production of safe and quality packaging.
